FAQ

WHY DO WE DO THE WORK WE DO?

In a state such as Goa, the majority of children are given the opportunity to enroll in school but due to a multitude of reasons the drop out rates continue to rise while the quality of education is at a standstill. As an organization, we aspire to give these children the opportunity to enjoy learning, to understand the value it brings into their lives, as it is only then that they themselves can become the key players in dertermining their own future.

In most rural areas of India, where the maximum population of our country still resides, lack of quality education and motivation are common problems, which we try to address through our various collaborations outside of Goa with schools and institutions working with children.

WHY ARE WE LOCATED IN GOA?

Our founder, Dr. Katharina Poggendorf-Kakar, moved to Goa in 2001, to make this state her home alongwith her husband.

India as a country was known to her for nearly 20 years, and having worked closely with communities, especially women and children during her student days as an anthropologist, she was always aware of the need for social development work for the overall growth of India.

Goa was a great platform to start Tara Trust as it is a state with 80% of its population being rural alongwith a large migrant community coming into the state seeking a better life.

WHO DO WE WORK WITH?

Tara Trust works with institutions who are in the Goa and India working with the underprivileged population. Acting as facilitators, we work with Government Schools and Anganwadis, Charity and Missionary Schools, Orphanages and Shelters for abandoned children and women and institutions working with children and people with special needs.

We fulfill this mission by collaborating with artists, professionals and trained specialists. We provide the opportunity for passionate, dedicated volunteers coming from either abroad or right here in India, to work in whatever manner, big or small, thus becoming an integral part of the Tara Trust community.

WHAT MAKES US UNIQUE?

The creative approach we take to conducting our programs and the manner in which we communicate our objectives to those we wish to impact. It is the long term relationships we strive to build with each individual and institution which we continue to develop on a weekly basis through our various programs and workshops.

WHY ART AND CREATIVE ENGAGEMENT AS OUR MEDIUM?

Art is a personal channel of expression. Art helps to give a tangible form to an individuals emotions, feelings, beliefs, fears, doubts, ambitions and dreams. Art is a universal language understood by all and is a medium that makes learning fun and experential. The medium of art and creative engagement allows us to work with varied groups and individuals on a common platform.

WHAT IS OUR CURRENT OUTREACH?

Since Tara Trust’s inception, our team has strived to be in more places and reach out to more institutions in need of help, while maintaining the one to one connection with the children, which is what we dedicate our work to.

In 2013, we’ve worked with close to 250 children in Goa, on a regular weekly basis, throughout the 15 institutions that we are currently associated with. Apart from this, through our special workshops, the 1000 Crane Project initiative and collaborations with partner organizations, we are able to reach out to hundreds of more children in other parts of Goa and additional states across India.

HOW DO WE RECEIVE FUNDING?

Tara Trust’s funding comes from certain grant organisations in India, along with small donations from friends and family who contribute whenever possible. 100% of the funds raised go into our projects and we do not charge a single child from the underprivileged  background for any workshops we do with them.  We can only accept funding from Indian organisations and individuals residing in India.

We are also working towards developing our own methods of generating revenue, which can then create a stable funding stream for our projects, thereby reducing our dependency on grants and funds from donors, which could vary from year to year.

HOW ARE THE FUND UTILIZED?

Almost three quarters of our expenses per month are primarily towards conducting our workshops, that directly impact the children we work with. Materials for our art workshops (paints, paper, crayons, etc) and transportation costs to each institution we work with, is where the larger majority of our spending goes into. The remaining one fourth of our expenses goes into keeping our office and operations running.

HOW CAN YOU PARTNER WITH TARA TRUST?

At Tara Trust, we believe that a strong community is one that is actively involved in the upliftment of its people.  As a growing organization, we are always on the lookout for institutions, corporations and individuals who appreciate the importance of our mission and can help support us through funding, sponsorship or even by sharing talents.

HOW DO WE EVALUATE OUR WORK?

We evaluate the success of our programs from the constant feedback that we gather from the children and institutions that we work with. We occasionally also have subject matter experts visiting our workshops and giving us feedback on how we can improve the quality of the work we do.
